After releasing its Climate Action Plan last week, the City of Houston took some action by committing to purchasing 100% renewable energy via a contract with NRG Energy. A “new, third-party utility-scale solar facility in Texas dedicated to City operations” will provide 1,034,399 MWh of renewable energy annually. Houston has long been the largest municipal purchaser of renewable energy, but this is the first time it has committed to 100% renewables. Mayor Turner announced that the contract will save the city $9.3 million per year. For more information, refer to the full press release at http://www.greenhoustontx.gov/pressrelease20200430.html
